NYCORP Scholarship FAQs

1What is NYCORP?
NYCORP, the New York Council of Relocation Professionals, is a non-profit organization that brings together corporations and relocation services in the New York metropolitan area to provide educational information and important updates to its members in the relocation industry.
2Why offer a scholarship?
When a high school student is relocated to a new place and school, the challenges can feel immense. They’re faced with giving up so much they had learned to count on: the comforts of their homes, established friendships, involvement with school and community activities, and much more. Then there’s the fact that they’re entering a new world: one where they must create and develop new lifestyles, adjust to a very different environment, and handle many unknown and unexpected situations. This vulnerable time can often be difficult, but as a community of relocation professionals, we at NYCORP have found that it can also provide inspirational and life-affirming lessons. Whatever the impact, we know that each relocating student has a very special story – one that is unique to their own experience and that we feel need to be told! In that spirit, NYCORP will award scholarships to deserving college-bound high school seniors who have relocated to New York City during their high school years.
3How does the NYCORP scholarship work?
NYCORP will award a specific amount annually as determined by fundraising capabilities. Our goal is to award as many scholarships as possible. The award will be sent to the college that the selected students will be attending to assist with tuition, books, and other college-related costs. In addition, if timing allows, NYCORP may apply to the national Worldwide ERC Foundation for Workforce Mobility for additional scholarship funds. If available, these funds may be applied in varying amounts to NYCORP scholarship recipients. We hope that you will join us in supporting the fund.
4Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?
To be considered eligible for the scholarship award, applying students must meet the following criteria: 1) Recently relocated -- Moved more than 50 miles and changed schools in the time period between 8th grade graduation and the senior year in high school 2) High academic performance – Maintained a current cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent achievement on a different scale) 3) Well-rounded – Involved in extra-curricular activities and/or community service 4) Completed essay – Submitted an essay addressing how they handled the challenges associated with relocating to a new area and a new high school
5What is involved in the student essay?
Students will need to submit essays with a minimum of 1,000 words and a maximum of 1,200 words. Applicants will describe their challenges and experiences encountered, in addition to successes achieved, while relocating to her or his new home and High School. Student applications should also include advice and coaching to another teenagers preparing to relocate. Please make copies as needed.
6What happens when a student is awarded a scholarship?
